What is a dental implant?
The dental implant is composed of an “artificial root”, similar to a screw, made of Titanium. This synthetic root is inserted by a specialized doctor inside the bone and after a variable period, from a few weeks to several months, the implant is welded with bone. This process of union between bone and implant is called osteointegration and is a natural process stimulated by the shape of the screw and the material of which it is composed. Once the implant is welded with the bone, a connector, called “abutment”, is installed; to the abutment one or more crowns are mounted. The crowns are nothing else than the synthetic teeth that replace the natural ones, and are custom made to match the natural teeth or to replace them completely, adapting perfectly to the natural shape of the mouth. These crowns can be made of different materials and must be built by specialized laboratories in order to restore the full functionality of the teeth correctly.
